The annual series of Posta Stamps variable value stamps once again acquaints us with another aspect of the social and cultural reality of this unknown autonomous archipelago part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroe Islands. In 2023 we travel, albeit virtually, to Suðuroy.
Suðuroy is the southernmost of the 18 islands that make up the Faroe Islands archipelago. Its name literally means ‘southern island’. The island has a population of just over 4,500. To the east of the island lies the deep Trongisvágsfjørður fjord, along which the island’s main settlements and towns have sprung up, four of which have been chosen to illustrate the new series; Froðba, Tvøroyri, Trongisvágur and Hov, a little further south.
